FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between hard and soft enamel?

Soft enamel badges use recessed enamel where you can feel the raised and recessed details of the badge. Hard enamel badges the enamel is polished flat, so it sits level with the metal of the badge.

What size can my enamel badge be?

You can have an enamel badge any size you require and if unsure we will of course recommend a suitable size for your design.

What shape can my enamel badge be?

Your enamel badge can be pretty much any shape you desire. Although certain shapes will require the badge to be made from a zinc alloy process and this will incur a slightly higher cost per badge.

What attachment can I have for the badge?

We offer a free butterfly fixing with all our enamel badges or you can choose from the following Brooch style, magnet, stick pin etc. We can advise on a suitable fixing for you.

Do you produce backing/presentation cards for the badges?

Yes, we can produce one- or two-sided backing cards for your enamel badges. We can advise on a suitable size to display the badges.

What file type do you need the design in?

Ideally, we would prefer the design in Adobe Illustrator, eps or any other vector format. Don’t worry if you don’t have these formats, we can accept jpg, gif, pdf and many other file types. Even a rough sketch or photo will be fine as our design department can produce artwork from almost anything.

How long does it take to make enamel badges?

Enamel badges usually take 3-4 weeks to produce once artwork has been approved. Depending on production lines they can sometimes take just over 2 weeks to produce.

What does epoxy on a badge mean?

Epoxy is a resin that protects the enamel paint on the badge, and they give the badge a smooth to touch finish.

What’s a butterfly fixing on a badge?

A butterfly fixing sometimes known as a clutch fixing is the most popular fixing for an enamel badge. The badge will have a pin on the back and the butterfly fixing attaches securely to the pin.

Will I get to see some artwork before you make the badges?

Yes, we will always send you final artwork for approval via email before we start making your enamel badges. Once the artwork has been approved production will start and it’s important to double check the spelling and colours as we can’t accept any responsibility once started.

Can I see a sample of my badge before ordering?

Yes, we can produce samples although there will be a charge for this. Please bear in mind if you need your badges within 3-4 weeks there might not be enough time to produce samples.

How much is delivery?

Delivery is free of charge to one UK address. Enamel badges are usually sent out via signed for Royal Mail delivery or UPS depending on how many badges are in the delivery.

How are the badges packaged for delivery?

Enamel badges will usually come in individual poly bags and bulk packaged in either a jiffy bag or cardboard box.

What is your minimum order?

We have a minimum order of 50 for enamel badges.

What colours can I have on my enamel badge?

We work to pantone colours for enamel badges and if you know the pantone reference, we can match your colours. If not, we will come up with the closest match to your colours.

What are enamel pins made of?

Enamel pin badges can be made from iron, brass or zinc alloy. Iron is cheaper than brass and zinc alloy. Enamel pin badges that have cut outs and unusual shapes are normally made from zinc alloy.

What is the difference between cloisonne and enamel?

Cloisonne badges used an ancient technique for metalwork and were the process for traditional hard enamel badges. Since the 90’s a more modern technique has replaced this process and the badges are now know as imitation hard enamel or hard enamel.

What does die struck mean?

These are badges that have no enamel colour fill and will use the colour of the metal for the badge. You can have different effects from Antique metal to 3D finishes.

What is a Photo Printed Badge?

These badges use a 4 colour CMYK printed process. The design is offset printed on to stainless steel metal with an epoxy coating to protect the image. Printed badges can also be cut into any shape.

How do you make your own enamel pins?

Create some artwork which can be a rough or use one of the many design programmes available. Contact us we can advise on the most suitable enamel badge option for you.

How much do enamel pins cost?

As most enamel pin badges are custom made the cost can vary and all depends on the volume you order. The cost will usually involve a one-off fee for the mould and the more badges you order the cheaper the price.
